Ficus grandiflora (male), Crocker Range 02, Sabah

Section through a male fig showing the dense male flowers with prominent anthers on the left side of the photo. Ficus grandiflora is dioecious  i.e. separate male and female plants. Female plants only produce female figs with no male flowers. However male plants produced figs with both male and (female in appearance) gall flowers. The gall flowers act as incubators for pollinating fig wasps. A second collection of this same fig plant was also made two years later.
