Ficus acamptophylla, Sg Wain, Balikpapan, Kalimantan

Acamptophylla IMG_7816.JPG

Note that although the leaves look as if they grow in a single plane (distichous), they actually grow in whorls.

This is the reservoir lake at Sungai Wain, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan that provides the water supply for Balikpapan city. Ficus acamptophylla grows as a liana scrambling over bushes and small trees in the freshwater swamp forest surrounding the lake. The lake contains several large crocodiles which occasionally take the local fishermen.
