Ficus variegata (red) at Crocker Range Park HQ, Sabah

This unusual variety of Ficus variegata with young figs that are red (rather than green)  is growing next to the toilet block at the rest stop opposite the Crocker Range Park HQ on the Kimanis to Keningau Road that crosses the Crocker Range.

Ficus variegata is a very common fig in Borneo but I know of only two examples with young figs that are red. Normally the young figs are green turning red as they ripen. The other individual with  red immature figs grows on the access road to the nexus Resort, Kota Kinabalu.

The rest stop is directly opposite the Crocker Range Park HQ.   This is also a good location to look for another rare fig Ficus gul. Several individuals  grow in the area including one next to the rest stop and above the stream on the opposite side of the road
