ABOVE: An immature male Ficus uncinata fig fruit in cross section photographed at the Borneo Highlands Golf Resort, Gunung Penrissen, Padawan, Kuching, Sarawak.

All fig photos  are of the same plant taken by Astrid Cruaud and  Jean-Yves Rasplus on 14 February 2011.

The green circles on the photo above  circle the immature male flowers (anthers and stamens) indicating that the whole plant is male. The numerous white globes are the immature gall flowers which act as brood chambers for pollinating fig wasps.

The varied size of the male fig fruits  in this photo indicates that  on this plant they do not ripen simultaneously  but ripen single in sequence (steady state)  rather than in one big bang. Male figs usually expand in size as they ripen so the  fig fruit upper right appears to be almost “ripe” ready to release its  crop of fig wasps.

 

The buildings at the Borneo Highlands Resort include a Golf Club House and a Buddhist Retreat Hotel.
