Ficus scaberrima growing as an epiphyte on a tree next to the Borneo Rainforest Lodge at Danum Valley. The orange arrow points to hole in the hollow twig. This hole or slit is produced naturally by the plant to give access and to encourage ants to live in the hollow twig (domatia) and protect the leaves against leaf eaters such as the larvae (caterpillars) of butterflies and moths. F. scaberrima is the only Bornean fig with this habit.
