Ficus dubia: Pulau Gaya, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Ficus dubia growing along the trail from base Camp to Police beach on Gaya Island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park opposite Kota Kinabalu. Although a member of the Section Conosycea stranglers  Ficus dubia never strangles the host but survives by dropping down one or two large roots which provide water and nutrients  from the ground. In this unusual case the host tree has obviously rotted away  whilst the fig has survived  with the support of a single root.
