Ficus megaleia: Crocker Range, Sabah

Ficus megaleia growing next to the Kimanis-Keningau road  which runs through the Crocker Range Park in Sabah.

Ficus megaleia is one of two very common earth figs that grow along roadsides in the hills of Sabah. According to  Berg & Chantarasuwan (2007) A study on the taxonomy of some stoloniferous species of Ficus’  Ficus megaleia  can be distinguished from another common earth fig Ficus malayana by two key features of the leaves  (1)  6-24 side vein pairs not 6-7 pairs  and (2) With F. megaleia the majority of side veins are “furcate” (split) before they reach the margin of the leaf. With F. malayana a maximum of one or two side veins are furcate. Both these key features  be easily seen in the photos of F. megaleia shown below.

The orange arrows point to the furcate side veins i.e. side veins which branch before they reach the margin of the leaf. According to Berg (2007)  with Ficus megaleia most side veins are furcate but with F. malayana only one or two are furcate on each leaf.
