Ficus altissima: Hala Bala Southern Thailand

Ficus altissima in full fruit photographed at Hala Bala in Southern Thailand.

These photos clearly show two distinctive features of Ficus altissima;

  1. The short thick stipule is covered in a thin layer of downy hairs
  2. The fallen leaves leave prominent raised scars on the twigs

Note that some of the ripe figs have an area like a cap around the ostiole damaged. This is almost certainly due to predatory squirrels trying to obtain easy access to emerging fig wasps. This would have happened before the figs ripened, at the wasp emergent stage.
