It is a defining characteristic of two sections of root climbing Bornean figs that the undersurface of the leaves are more or less tessellate.
Tessellate means “tiled ” in Latin and refers to the fact the under-surface is marked by clearly defined polygons which are roughly square or rectangular.
All figs in Sections Rhizocladus and Section Kalosyce have leaves that are more or less tessellate on the under-surface.
