Ficus trichocarpa: Bathyphyll leaves at Tawau Hills Park

Ficus trichocarpa is a very common root climbing fig of tall forest throughout Borneo.

The leaves of the young plant (bathyphylls) differ greatly from the leaves of the mature adult plant (acrophylls) so young plants often go unrecognised. As shown in the photos below both the upper and under sides of the leaf are covered in sharp hairs and feel scabrid (like sandpaper) to the touch.
