Note that the Ficus sycomorus figs in the Ngorongoro crater only grow in a thin strip along the the banks of the sunken streams making it very difficult for elephants to strip the bark. These figs never grow in the open plains where they would not survive. The streambanks are unstable and too risky for an elephant to venture.
