Ficus tengerensis: Female fig fruit

Female fig fruit of Ficus tengerensis collected by Linus Gokusing close to Mushroom Shed 40 c. 1,000 m asl, Kota Kinabalu – Tambunan Road in the Crocker Range, Sabah. 14 October 2014. The arrow points to the placement of the basal bracts. The  extension of the fig fruit into a “handle” below the bracts is known as a “stipe”. If the bracts occur  lower down next to the fruit then the stipe becomes a “peduncle” or fruit stalk.

Note the absence of male anthers surrounding the ostiole which identifies this as a female (seed) fig. The bright pink/purple colour of the ripe female flowers (ovaries)  inside the fig is distinctive for both F. fistulosa and  F. tengerensis female figs.
