Ficus drupacea and the Pontianak ghost at Rasa Ria, Tuaran, Sabah

This magnificent Ficus drupacea fig is growing  next to the visitors car park of the Ocean Wing and Spa at the Rasa Ria resort near Tuaran in Sabah.

The entrance to the Ocean Wing Rasa Ria Resort and Spa is opposite a magnificent Ficus drupacea fig tree.
Unlike Ficus microarpa which often drops down abundant long ropes of hanging roots most Ficus drupacea fig trees  do not have hanging roots. However this individual at the Rasa Ria resort  is an exception, with a dense curtain of  roots hanging from a single damaged branch. Some Borneo locals believe that these roots symbolise the hair of a local ghost known as a Pontianak.  As a result fig trees with hanging roots are often protected  lest the resident ghosts  be disturbed and transfer their ghostly attentions to the humans damaging the fig tree.
