In August 1960 the Professor of Tropical Botany at Cambridge E. J. H. Corner  visited Kinabalu to plan the first of two Royal Society Expeditions to Kinabalu. These expeditions took place in 1961 and again in 1964 and involved both local and foreign scientists.  The intention was to research both the flora and the fauna  as a starting point for establishing a protected park. The result in 1965 was the foundation of Kinabalu Park. Corner was particularly interested in figs and in particular the figs of Borneo.     Photo by Corner of the Ranau Plain.
