The Birds of Borneo authored by B.E. Smythies was first published in 1960. The cover illustrated above shows a male  Rhinoceros Hornbill overlooking a traditional  longhouse  next to a river in the interior of Sarawak.

When Smythies’ book was first published  the majority of Sarawak (and Borneo) was mostly covered by almost continuous virgin primary dipterocarp forest. Smythies was a botanist and a forester and  helped draft the plans for  the long term sustainable logging  of Sarawak’s  (mainly) virgin forests.
