The 1,500 ha of Gaya Island or Pulau Gaya are still 90 % covered by the original forest of west Sabah protected in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Gaya was only separated from the mainland by rising sea levels c.1000 years ago and and the plants are a unique and valuable relic of Sabah’s original west coast vegetation.
