Bud covers for juvenile figs as shown by Ficus stricta

Berg (2005) notes that many Bornean figs in Section Conosycea  have calyptrate (cap like)  bud covers which protect the young unripe figs against insect attack. These bud covers are often covered in short stiff hairs. As the juvenile figs grow and expand these bud covers wither and fall off the fig.

Ficus species that  produce bud covers include;

  1. annualata
  2. altissima
  3. benjamina
  4. binnendijkii,
  5. cucurbitina,
  6. consociata,
  7. elastica,
  8. forstenii,
  9. globosa,
  10. lawesii,
  11. subcordata,
  12. stricta
