The photos in this article show the young figs of Ficus cucurbitina covered by “calyptrate bud covers“.
Bud covers are tough temporary pockets to protect the young figs from insect attack. Whilst the figs of many stranglers have bud covers, the bud covers of Ficus cucurbitina appear to be the biggest and toughest.
