Ficus bruneiensis saplings growing next to a logging trail at Sg Sut in the Kapit district of Sarawak. Note the red stipule and  the hollow stem and the copious white latex. A distinctive feature of this fig is that on young plants the petiole and the proximal portion of the mid-rib are red on the young leaves.

All photos by Elliot Gardner  taken on 10 February 2020.  Collection # EG832.  Part of a project entitled Ethnobotany and ethnotaxonomy of Moraceae in Sarawak supported by the National Parks Board of Singapore.

Note that the upper surface of the leaf although it appears smooth at  a distance is actually covered with short white hairs giving the leaf surface a sandpaper feel.
