Ficus fulva (male): Squirrel predation of fig wasps at Ranau

A “ripe” male Ficus fulva fig attacked by a squirrel presumably to get access to the fig wasps emerging from their brood chambers inside the fig. See similar photos of Ficus lepicarpa in Brunei.

All photos taken by Shuai LIAO  on 8 September 2019 at  Kampung Gondohon near Ranau, Sabah. Collection #20190372.

Although the squirrel had vanished by the time the fig was photographed the most likely candidate is the Plantain Squirrel Calliosciurus notatus which is the most common squirrel in secondary forest throughout Borneo.
