Plantain Squirrel Calliosciurus notatus is the most common squirrel of open countryside, plantations, gardens and the forest edge throughout Borneo.
Plantain Squirrels are omnivorous eating fruits and seeds and often foraging for insects. This squirrel was photographed in a giant Ficus drupacea fig tree at Tg Aru beach.
As can be seen from the photos the figs are unripe.
Plantain Squirrels are often seen in fig trees but not often feeding on figs.
Plantain Squirrels are known to bite open unripe figs to eat the fig wasps that are developing inside.
