According to Berg & Corner (2005) these two very similar fig species can be told apart by two unique features;
(1) Ficus midotis leaves are slightly wavy with a slightly serrated edge whilst Ficus rubromidotis leaves are wavy but with a smooth edge.
(2) Ficus midotis stipules are semi-amplexicaul whilst Ficus rubromidotis are fully amplexicaul.
Compare the photos of the stipule of Ficus rubromidotis (amplexicaul) in this article with these photos of Ficus midotis , which is semi-amplexicaul.
Both species are endemic to Borneo.
