Ficus stupenda is a common strangling fig of hill forest in Sabah and Brunei but scarce further south in Borneo.
The giant fig fruits (up to 5 cm diameter) are much favoured by large hornbills so this may be due to the long term heavy hunting of hornbills in Kalimantan and Sarawak, as Ficus stupenda figs are too large to be dispersed by smaller birds. Similar figs with very large fruits including Ficus dubia and Ficus subcordata also appear to have suffered a population crash south of the Brunei- Sarawak border.
