Ficus stupenda is a common strangling fig of hill forest in Sabah and Brunei but scarce further south in Borneo.
The giant fig fruits (up to 5 cm diameter) are much favoured by Borneo largest hornbills, the Rhinoceros Hornbill and the Helmeted Hornbill. The current scarcity of Ficus stupenda in Sarawak and Kalimantan may be due to intensive hunting of hornbills in Kalimantan and Sarawak over many years. Similar figs with very large fruits include Ficus dubia and Ficus subcordata which also appear to have suffered a population crash south of the Brunei- Sarawak border in recent years.
