This Sumatran Pit Viper Parias sumatranus  was waiting next to a fruiting Ficus septica tree  growing next to the Bangkap Road in Sipitang SW Sabah on 02 January 2021. The Bangkap Road runs next o the Sungei Mensalong.

Pit Vipers specialize in feeding on small birds and mammals and often wait near to fruiting figs trees for their prey.

Snakes are probably attracted to areas of bird and small mammal  activity  by the infra red sensitive “pits”on their heads, rather than being able to recognize  ripe figs.
