Ficus lanata is an uncommon climbing liana fig of mountain forest in Borneo which also occurs in the mountains of Java and Sumatra.
The mountain forest surrounding Kinabalu Park HQ is a world center of diversity both for Fagaceae (Quercus oaks, chestnuts and Lithocarpus oaks) and Figs.
Ficus lanata figs are reputed to be one of the smallest figs in Borneo (less than one centimeter in diameter).
As male figs swell as they mature, the male figs shown in the photographs (1 cm x 1 cm) would be twice the size of ripe female figs.
The photos show male figs from which the pollinating fig wasps have already left.
Nothing eats old male figs so these figs will fall to the ground and rot.
However a tiny Sculptor Squirrel Glyphotes simus was foraging around the figs presumably hoping to catch some late exiting wasps for lunch.
This fruiting F. lanata fig was growing on a old Pinus carribea tree next to the Kinabalu Park HQ office (1,500m).
