Ficus carrii  is a rare Borneo endemic root climbing fig liana confined to mountain forests in Sabah, North Borneo.

Ficus carrii is locally common  in the virgin forests surrounding Mount Kinabalu Park HQ, Sabah.

However it is very difficult to find the large hairy fruits which are produced at canopy level.

Fortunately, F. carrii fig lianas can be recognized from the distinctive leaves  which  can be easily found growing up tree trunks in the mountain forest.

As with several other Bornean figs  such as Ficus punctata and Ficus ruginervia the undersurface of leaves is foveolate  which means the surface is  covered with tiny holes.

Although it is impossible to see the holes without a microscope, foveolate leaves can be recognized from the distinctive pattern shown on the underside of the leaf in the photograph below.
